Unit 3: Criminal and Constitutional Law

- Standard: The Learner will be able to understand basic criminal and constitutional law (RBT: B2)
- Examine the structure and processes of the criminal justice system.
- Differentiate between civil law and criminal law.
- Explore the rights of citizens guaranteed by the United States.
- Explain the powers granted to the police and the restrictions placed upon them by the respective constitutions and amendments.
- Describe how laws are classified.
- Describe a crime that includes all ideal elements.
- Select criminal charges based on given scenarios.
- Feel free to use my plans as a guide. My course is based on 52 minute class periods. My students in the first year course are 9th or 10th graders. These materials may need updating. Be sure to check web links.
- I use the textbook Introduction to Criminal Justice by Bohm/Haley. References to assignments or readings would be from this text. You may be able to get a complementary copy from Glencoe/McGraw Hill.
- I split this into two sections. One that focuses on the the legal system and U.S. Constitution and the other that focuses more on state law.
- You will need to apply the corresponding North Carolina criminal code.
- We have to certify our students in CPR and AEDs each year. So those are in the daily outline.
