Industry Provider: Blue Ridge Mountain Drones

BRMD has designed several industry recognized credential for drones specific to public safety and police. BRMD courses are designed by industry experts with extensive field experience. BRMD trains and certifies public safety and law enforcement agencies nationwide. That same certification is available to your students!

BRMD and LAPSEN have been working together to provide the best offering in drone training for secondary and post-secondary education. Schools are able to offer a cohesive program of study that certifies their students.

Drone Certifications 

FAA Part 107

LASPEN does not offer the FAA Part 107. FAA Part 107 test is only offered at FAA-authorized testing centers. Cost of the test – $175. Click Here to learn more. 

The FAA Part 107 is basic licensing for commercial drone use. The LAPSEN Drone Pathway has options to implement 107 training for your students. 

LAPSEN with BRMD offers training for teachers to learn how to prepare students.

NFPA 2400 Standard for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Used for Public Safety Operations (2019 edition) 

This part of the certification process begins to focus on public safety skills sets. This part requires 25-30 hours of class time including skills practice and evaluation. To read more on NFPA 2400 Click Here

This credential aligns with the LAPSEN drones course standards and supporting lesson plans, curricula and resources.

50 test items ~ 60 minutes 

70 Cut Score  

Certification Exam: $25 or $20 for LAPSEN members.

Pretest: $12

Prior to testing – instructors must validate successful completion of student skill achievements. 

ESRI Drone2Map

This part of the certification process begins to focus on integrating drone data into 2D and 3D mapping applications. This part requires 25 hours of class time. To read more about Drone2Map Click Here

      All of our testing partners offer their tests through a single platform for the convenience of educators. Scholastic Testing and Credential Certifications (STACC) offers the platform flexibility we need. You can find all the LAPSEN IRCs there.

      Implementation

      Note: BRMD allows a one school year grace period for a teacher to complete all training. During this time a school may teach, test, and certify students.

      Instructor Certification

      Instructors must be FAA 107 certified prior to being trained. 

      For NFPA 2400 – instructors must complete the NFPA 2400 Certification and Train the Trainer Class. It is an 8 hour class. 

      For Drone2Map – instructors must complete the Drone2Map Certification and Train the Trainer Class. It is an 8 hour class.

      NFPA 2400 NIST Props, NIST Test Supplies

      The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developed a comprehensive set of standard test methods and associated performance metrics to quantify key capabilities of emergency response robots. This is the drone training prop recommended by NIST.
